2014 was the last year any single cab Toyota Tacoma was offered in the States. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! gives me cravings... [ahem] Moving on...
Today t he Ranger, Canyo rado, and Tacoma are not available in single-cab form. The new Gladiator — which is anything but small — is only available with four doors.
Thus, the used
2013 Tacoma
I linked suffers
from the following taxes:
t he Toyota tax
the Tacoma tax
the 4x4 tax
the 4x4 Toyota tax
the 4x4 Tacoma tax
the [air quotes] “Last of Its Kind” tax
Check out these MSRP figures, from autotrader:
Can you imagine picking up a new 4x4 for under $22k today? This was only five years ago.
But today, the cheapest RWD Tacoma cost more.
In summation: things cost money and that continues to be an inconvenience for people maybe.
Thank you for reading.

Really, I didn’t know. I just thought they were only special order and dealers never wanted them for general inventory.

The cost doesn’t inconvenience most people because the lenders are more than happy to continue stretching loan terms closer and closer to mortgage length in order to keep monthly payments the same

Due to not being in North America...I can get a brand new previous generation Isuzu/Holden Colorado 4x4 single cab diesel ute...that is now made in China by Great Wall. It is so similar that the entire front clip is swappable between all three brands. Flat bed tray , alloy wheels, six speed manual , turbo lag that is measured in minutes, questionable dynamics, flexible build quality and all the engineered safety that one would expect in a pickup developed 20 years ago. All your for the equivalent of US$16 ,000. And you can probably get it for cheaper again...
I wouldn't though...

The Taco tax isn’t going away anytime soon, when I got my 2018 I thought I could shop around and find a used 2014 off lease and save a bunch of money, because deprecation . Nope, woulda saved a couple of a grand, may as well bite the bullet and buy a new one.
My needs were pretty basic: I needed a quad cab because my company offers a car allow ance (two doors = no allowance ) and e nded up with a short bed as a result. In hindsight the extra foot of bed I gave up would be awfully handy when hauling bigger stuff, but it still works for me. I got the basic 4x 4 3.5L with cloth seats, the only option I got was the factory OEM tonneau cover (because Seattle) and I installed mud flaps all around. Pretty much a stripper Taco for $38k.
I’ve d riven it for almost two years now and had to take it in for service once for a recall (the anti-collision radar needed a firmware update), other than that it’s been 100% trouble free . Three years of free maintenance along with the factory warranty means the truck costs me insurance + gas to drive, my allowance covers everything. So I leased the truck for three years and will buy it out when the lease is up.
Got a good amo unt of snow last February and it performed admirably in 4x4 mode, I had no concerns that it would leave me stranded. I live out in the country and do a fair bit of construction work on the weekends, and it’s also served admirably to shlep stuff (I’m in the middle of moving and it sure is handy).
Compared to the Big Th ree pick ups this thing is tiny, may as well be driving a sedan when you’re behind a big honkin’ Ram or F150, can’t see shit. The upside is the truck drives and handles much better than the competition, and I have no doubt the truck will likely run forever with v ery few issues. My mom hates trucks but she sure enjoys riding in the Taco when she visits us, it’s just a comfortable place to be and easy for a 5' lady to climb in & out. My Cayman is a no go for mom, she wants n one of that, but she does like my wife’s 2016 Focus hatchback and the Taco.
Is it worth almost $40K? All things being equal that’s not terribly expensive for a 4x4 truck and there’s no doubt you can drive one of these things trouble free for a long long time, the purchase price can be amortized. But yeah, still a lot of money for a pretty basic truck. TLDR: no regrets

This BaT auction should be entertaining.
